RGS-IGB Conference 2009

The GLTRG has had another successful year at the RGS-IBG Annual Conference 2009 held in Manchester with two concurrent sessions.

The first, entitled “Researching Beyond The Tourist Gaze: Accessing and Understanding Embodied Performances in Tourism” was convened by Caroline Scarles (University of Surrey) and Jo-anne Lester (University of Brighton). Caroline and Jo-anne were joined by academics from as far as Australia and New Zealand as they discussed new, innovative methodologies and methods in tourism. From film and photography to story-telling, narration and website creation, the sessions provided stimulating discussion amongst both presenters and attendees. The second session, entitled “Hospitality and Regeneration” was convened by Dr Peter Lugosi (Bournemouth University). As with the previous sessions, Peter was joined by academics from as far as Brazil and Italy as the range of papers discussed issues such as: spaces of consumption for disadvantaged groups, architecture and hotel design, rituals of commensality and the role of restaurants in sustaining rural industries and initiating urban transformation.
